Company Summary

Hercules Chemical Company (Hercules) was founded in 1915 in New York. Its line of plumbing products reportedly contained over 100 options, from plastic pipe cement and putty to various types of gaskets, sealants, and bonding products.

Beginning around the 1950s, many of this brand’s products had something else in common – the inclusion of asbestos.
One popular asbestos-containing product made by Hercules was Sta-Put Stainless Putty. This type of putty is used to create watertight seals in areas that may leak, like pipes and sinks.
Some occupations that were at the most risk of exposure to asbestos from the company’s products were plumbers, HVAC employees, pipefitters, and construction workers.
Hercules used asbestos in its products for roughly 30 years, stopping in the early 1980s, which was a bit later than some other companies in the industry.
