Asbestos 101 Videos

Asbestos 101 is your default destination for learning about asbestos. Our multi-part series covers everything from simple explanations of what asbestos actually is to in-depth medical studies, lawsuit overviews, and major conspiracies. People think asbestos is a problem of the past, but it is still very prevalent in many industries and in many parts of the world. And many people are still dying. Asbestos Attorney Justinian C. Lane lost his grandparents and his father to asbestos exposure and has dedicated his professional life to helping people similarly hurt.

Asbestos 101 begins with the basics: what asbestos is, where it comes from, and why this natural mineral became so widely used in industry. Asbestos attorney Justinian Lane explains the six types of asbestos, including chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, tremolite, actinolite, and anthophyllite, and shows how asbestos forms in nature as long, thin mineral fibers. This episode also looks at the long history of asbestos, from ancient fireproof cloth, asbestos wicks, and legendary asbestos tablecloths to the Industrial Revolution and the rise of modern asbestos products. You’ll learn why asbestos was prized for heat resistance, strength, insulation, and durability — and why those same fibers later became linked to serious health risks.Topics include asbestos mines, chrysotile asbestos, crocidolite asbestos, tremolite contamination, Libby, Montana, Johns Manville, Henry Ward Johns, and how asbestos went from rare ancient curiosity to a major industrial material.Learn more about asbestos exposure, asbestos products, mesothelioma claims, asbestos claims, and compensation options at https://www.asbestosclaims.law.0:00 Introduction1:03 What is asbestos?1:15 The six asbestos minerals2:00 Chrysotile and asbestos fibers3:30 How asbestos forms in nature4:55 What an asbestos vein looks like6:04 Chrysotile, white asbestos, and asbestos mines7:33 Amosite and industrial asbestos use8:17 Crocidolite and asbestos strength9:10 Tremolite, contamination, and Libby, Montana10:40 Actinolite and anthophyllite asbestos11:42 Asbestos in ancient history14:32 Where the word asbestos comes from16:10 Fireproof cloth, wicks, and burial linens18:27 Asbestos in Asia and ancient roof materials20:40 Asbestos lamps and Vestal Virgins22:40 Salamanders, fire myths, and asbestos symbolism24:09 Charlemagne’s asbestos tablecloth and Benjamin Franklin’s asbestos purse26:40 The Industrial Revolution and the asbestos industry28:27 Early asbestos insulation and pipe covering29:50 Johns Manville and the rise of modern asbestos30:45 Henry Ward Johns and early asbestos products32:59 Henry Ward Johns’ death and possible asbestosis

In Part 2 of Asbestos 101, asbestos attorney Justinian Lane explains how raw asbestos was turned into products — and why those products ended up in so many homes, workplaces, vehicles, factories, and consumer goods.Using historic mining and factory footage, this episode shows how asbestos fibers were separated, crushed, graded, carded, spun, and woven into manufactured materials. It also explains why companies promoted asbestos as a “miracle mineral”: it was strong, lightweight, heat resistant, insulating, and difficult to burn. You’ll see examples of asbestos in pipe insulation, stoves, gaskets, packing, electrical insulation, theater curtains, aircraft and spacecraft components, vinyl asbestos floor tile, beer filters, gas masks, safes, household products, and more. The video also explains why some asbestos products were especially risky when they released airborne fibers during manufacturing, installation, removal, repair, sanding, cutting, or demolition. This episode also introduces key historical companies and products, including Johns Manville, UNARCO, Garlock, Owens Illinois, and Kaylo calcium silicate insulation, while previewing the health risks and industry coverup discussed later in the Asbestos 101 series.Learn more about asbestos exposure, asbestos products, mesothelioma claims, asbestos claims, and compensation options at https://www.asbestosclaims.law.0:00 Introduction1:17 Quick refresher: what asbestos is2:01 Historic asbestos mining and factory footage2:41 Explosives, mining, and asbestos ore3:29 Pulling and grading asbestos fibers4:21 Crushing asbestos rock5:18 Cobbing rooms and factory processing6:31 Carding machines and asbestos fiber preparation7:31 Roving machines and asbestos textile production8:00 Historic asbestos advertising9:00 Magnesia pipe covering and asbestos insulation10:01 Asbestos-lined stoves and vintage appliances10:53 UNARCO, wartime ads, and industrial asbestos13:00 Garlock gaskets and asbestos sealing products15:12 Kaylo insulation and Owens Illinois20:00 Kaylo health risks and the Saranac Labs warning21:48 Common asbestos product uses22:02 Space vehicles, electrical insulation, and medical filters23:08 Asbestos cloth and packing24:49 Theater curtains, mailbags, and dry cleaning presses25:52 Aircraft, spacecraft, and asbestos gaskets26:34 Household asbestos products and iron rests27:22 Asbestos paper, safes, stoves, and heaters29:01 Brake linings, gas masks, plastics, and floor tile29:40 Vinyl asbestos floor tile and home renovation risks30:29 Asbestos in beer filters32:17 Asbestos sandboxes and the human cost#Asbestos101 #AsbestosProducts #AsbestosExposure

Asbestos exposure can cause serious diseases decades after someone first breathed in the fibers. In Part 3 of Asbestos 101, asbestos attorney Justinian Lane explains how asbestos affects the body and why diseases like mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis can take so long to appear. This episode breaks down what happens when asbestos fibers enter the lungs, why the body has trouble clearing them, and how repeated or prolonged exposure can lead to inflammation, scarring, cellular damage, and cancer. Justinian also explains key medical concepts like dose response, latency periods, frustrated phagocytosis, pleural plaques, pulmonary fibrosis, and the difference between non-malignant and malignant asbestos-related diseases. The video also covers the major diseases linked to asbestos exposure, including asbestosis, lung cancer, pleural mesothelioma, peritoneal mesothelioma, pericardial mesothelioma, laryngeal cancer, stomach cancer, colorectal cancer, and other possible asbestos-related conditions. It also explains why smoking does not automatically rule out an asbestos lung cancer claim when asbestos exposure contributed to the disease.Part 3 also looks at the history of asbestos medical research, including early warnings from doctors and researchers, evidence involving asbestos workers, the story of Nellie Kershaw, the work of Richard Doll, findings from Saranac Laboratory, and how industry knowledge about asbestos health risks developed over time.Learn more about asbestos exposure, asbestos-related diseases, mesothelioma claims, asbestos claims, and compensation options at https://www.asbestosclaims.law.0:00 Introduction0:30 The health effects of asbestos2:18 Asbestos, lung cancer, and mesothelioma2:40 Dose response and asbestos exposure risk3:30 Brief exposure vs. long-term asbestos exposure4:50 Non-malignant asbestos diseases and cancer risks5:59 How asbestos fibers affect the body6:29 Frustrated phagocytosis explained8:00 Why asbestos fibers are so dangerous10:04 What happens to asbestos fibers in the lungs11:13 Medical research on asbestos health risks13:11 Pleural plaques and asbestos exposure15:00 Asbestosis and pulmonary fibrosis17:00 Early asbestos workers and lung disease20:10 Nellie Kershaw and early asbestos compensation fights21:00 Asbestos-related diseases can be fatal21:48 Asbestos and lung cancer24:00 Mortality studies and asbestos workers26:59 Richard Doll, Turner & Newall, and asbestos research28:37 Saranac Laboratory and asbestos cancer findings30:40 Asbestos exposure, smoking, and lung cancer33:13 U.S. Surgeon General findings on asbestos and smoking35:30 Mesothelioma and asbestos exposure36:16 Pleural, peritoneal, and pericardial mesothelioma39:01 Dose response and mesothelioma risk40:38 Throat cancers and asbestos exposure41:35 Laryngeal cancer and asbestos44:08 Stomach cancer, colorectal cancer, and asbestos44:40 Asbestos compensation for cancer claims#Asbestos101 #AsbestosExposure #Mesothelioma

Asbestos 101, Part 3: The Health Risks of Asbestos Exposure

For decades, asbestos companies knew their products could injure and kill workers — but instead of warning people, many in the industry worked to control the science, limit lawsuits, and keep the truth from reaching the public. In Part 4 of Asbestos 101, asbestos attorney Justinian Lane breaks down how the asbestos cover-up worked. This episode traces early lawsuits against Johns Manville, confidential settlements, internal company concerns about asbestosis claims, and the growing fear that public knowledge of asbestos disease could threaten the entire industry. The episode also looks at the role of doctors, laboratories, insurers, trade groups, and industry-backed organizations in shaping what the public, workers, courts, and government agencies were allowed to know. Topics include MetLife, Dr. Anthony Lanza, Saranac Laboratory, Vandiver Brown, the Mellon Institute, the Air Hygiene Foundation, the Industrial Hygiene Foundation, secret asbestos studies, edited medical reports, and efforts to influence occupational disease laws.Part 4 also covers evidence involving asbestos cancer research, including Dr. Leroy Gardner’s animal studies, Dr. Vorwald’s work, early lung cancer findings, the 1936 memorandum of agreement, the 1943 cancer warning, and later research by Sir Richard Doll. Together, these records show how asbestos companies delayed, minimized, or suppressed warnings about asbestosis, lung cancer, mesothelioma, and other asbestos-related diseases.Learn more about asbestos exposure, asbestos-related diseases, mesothelioma claims, asbestos claims, and compensation options at https://www.asbestosclaims.law.0:00 Introduction1:00 How the asbestos cover-up worked2:51 Early asbestos lawsuits and confidential settlements6:04 Why secrecy mattered to the industry7:30 Johns Manville, asbestosis claims, and financial pressure11:51 Vandiver Brown and company leadership15:17 Early knowledge inside the asbestos industry17:34 Silicosis, asbestosis, and occupational disease claims21:56 MetLife, Dr. Anthony Lanza, and Saranac Laboratory24:25 Pressure not to publish damaging research30:39 Industry-controlled science and secret studies34:21 Editing medical reports and shaping the record39:15 Worker fear, labor concerns, and keeping plants running48:00 Mellon Institute and industry defense strategy56:52 Coordinating companies to limit liability1:02:00 Medical boards and controlling disease diagnoses1:07:10 Mellon Institute funding and the “dust problem”1:10:52 Air Hygiene Foundation and Industrial Hygiene Foundation1:16:00 Collecting published and unpublished dust disease data1:21:12 Attempts to influence the AMA and legal standards1:25:06 Efforts to restrict lawsuits and compensation claims1:30:00 Secret asbestos studies and cancer research1:31:36 Dr. Leroy Gardner and Saranac Laboratory research1:35:57 Was there a safe level of asbestos exposure?1:39:56 Dr. Vorwald and unpublished cancer findings1:45:12 Evidence that chrysotile asbestos caused cancer1:50:14 The 1943 cancer warning1:53:06 Bowditch, Brown, and industry knowledge1:55:11 Richard Doll’s 1955 asbestos cancer study1:56:59 The 1936 memorandum of agreement#Asbestos101 #AsbestosCoverUp #AsbestosExposure

Asbestos 101, Part 4: How the Asbestos Industry Hid the Dangers

A diagnosis from asbestos exposure can leave people with urgent questions: What compensation options are available? What is an asbestos trust claim? Can someone file a lawsuit? What happens if the exposure happened at work, in the military, or decades ago?In Part 5 of Asbestos 101, asbestos attorney Justinian Lane explains the major legal and financial options that may be available to people diagnosed with asbestos-related diseases, including mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis. This episode covers asbestos bankruptcy trust claims, civil lawsuits, product liability cases, premises liability claims, FELA and Jones Act claims, workers’ compensation, Social Security Disability, and VA disability claims.Justinian also explains important legal concepts that often come up in asbestos cases, including statutes of limitations, statutes of repose, occupational exposure, non-occupational exposure, compensatory damages, punitive damages, contingency fees, Medicare reimbursement, wills, probate, and how asbestos claims may continue after someone passes away. This episode also looks at how asbestos bankruptcy trusts work, why companies like Johns Manville created trusts, how payment percentages affect claim values, and why trust claims are different from lawsuits. It also covers the historic Borel case and how product liability law helped shape modern asbestos litigation.Learn more about asbestos exposure, asbestos-related diseases, mesothelioma claims, asbestos claims, asbestos trust claims, and compensation options at https://www.asbestosclaims.law.0:00 Introduction0:39 Asbestos bankruptcy trust claims0:55 Civil lawsuits and asbestos compensation1:06 Product liability and premises liability claims1:27 FELA and Jones Act claims1:45 Workers’ compensation, Social Security, and VA claims2:39 Statutes of limitations4:00 The discovery rule and when to contact an attorney6:29 Occupational asbestos exposure8:12 Types of damages in asbestos lawsuits9:06 Punitive damages explained11:28 How asbestos bankruptcy trusts work12:59 How asbestos trusts are created and funded14:59 Trust distribution procedures and payment percentages17:18 Johns Manville trust payment history20:00 Why asbestos trusts pay percentages of claims23:10 Civil lawsuits compared with trust claims25:00 Johns Manville bankruptcy and failure-to-warn claims27:59 The Borel case and asbestos product liability30:00 Section 402A and defective product claims33:19 Occupational disease lawsuits and asbestos exposure37:19 Compensation for families and loss of consortium39:20 FELA and Jones Act asbestos claims41:59 Workers’ compensation for asbestos exposure43:11 VA disability claims for asbestos-related illness44:59 Social Security Disability and SSI47:30 Lawsuits, trust claims, and Medicare reimbursement49:59 Wills, probate, and asbestos claims after death#Asbestos101 #AsbestosClaims #MesotheliomaClaims

Asbestos Fragments 101 Videos:

Asbestos Fragments 101 are bite-sized bits from our expansive Asbestos 101 docuseries above. You can explore all five parts in full, of course, but sometimes you only have a few minutes to learn about the miracle mineral, and that’s what this playlist is for. If it’s important and involves asbestos, we probably cover it. And if we are missing something, let us know!

One asbestos exposure can be scary, but the real cancer risk depends on the type of asbestos, the amount of dust, how long the exposure lasted, and whether asbestos fibers were inhaled. In this video, Justinian Lane explains why asbestos health risks should be taken seriously without exaggerating or sensationalizing them. You’ll learn why diseases like mesothelioma and lung cancer are usually discussed in terms of exposure history, latency, and risk factors — and why no single exposure question has a one-size-fits-all answer. For broader context, watch the full Asbestos 101 series. Will One Asbestos Exposure Cause Cancer?

If you search on the internet you will find a lot of stuff about asbestos health risks.

We don't want to sensationalize anything here. We want to very clearly communicate what the actual risks of asbestos are and not over-dramatize it.

Let's look at FIVE undisputed FACTS about asbestos and human health.

This bite-sized nugget was cut from our extensive docuseries Asbestos 101.

Older vinyl floor tiles are one of the common places people worry about asbestos, especially in homes, schools, and workplaces built before modern asbestos restrictions. In this video, Justinian Lane looks at a vinyl asbestos floor tile sample and explains why some older flooring materials may look familiar to anyone who has spent time in older buildings. You’ll learn what possible asbestos flooring can look like, why appearance alone is not enough to confirm asbestos, and why professional testing matters before disturbing old tile, adhesive, or flooring materials. For broader context, watch the full Asbestos 101 series. Here's a bite-sized sample.

Asbestos floor tile. This stuff was everywhere! But because it is what's called a "locked-in" tile, it's not dangerous...unless you start sanding it or otherwise turning it into aerated material.

So it should come as no surprise that if you are doing a home remodel and are concerned about asbestos tile, you want to make sure proper precautions are taken. That should include hiring a licensed asbestos abatement company, or at the very least wearing proper asbestos-rated PPE.

NO AMOUNT OF ASBESTOS EXPOSURE IS CONSIDERED SAFE!

Asbestos 101 is part of our MAMMOTH series on asbestos, where we cover everything anyone could ever need to know about the "miracle mineral." You may not realize the impact asbestos has had on human history. You may think it is a "problem" of the past.

Dive into the world with us. You'll be glad you did.

Asbestos gaskets were widely used in industrial equipment because asbestos could withstand heat, pressure, and heavy wear. In this video, Justinian Lane discusses older asbestos gasket materials, including historical gasket advertising and industrial products made by companies that once used asbestos in their equipment. You’ll learn why asbestos gaskets mattered in workplaces such as plants, refineries, ships, and maintenance settings, and how workers could be exposed when old gasket material was handled, scraped, removed, or replaced. For broader context, watch the full Asbestos 101 series. Some asbestos claims involve exposure cutoffs, but working with asbestos after 1982 does not automatically mean you have no options. In this video, Justinian Lane explains why certain asbestos trusts use cutoff dates such as 1982 or 1986, and why the facts of a person’s exposure history still matter. You’ll learn why asbestos trust rules can vary, why later workplace exposure may require closer review, and why people exposed after major regulatory changes should not assume their situation is too late or too recent to ask questions. For broader context, watch the full Asbestos 101 series. Can I File an Asbestos Claim After 1982 Exposure?

Asbestos trusts tend to have a cut-off date no later than 1982 or 1986. The reason for this is because, after those dates, the law assumes anyone who worked with asbestos would be aware of the dangers and would choose to work with it voluntarily.

Being able to prove your work years is very important when it comes to filing an asbestos claim.

These "Asbestos Fragments" are quick cuts from our much longer, multi-part Asbestos 101 series, which explores everything you could ever need to know about asbestos, from the science to the tragedy to the laws in place today.

Asbestos law is literally ALL we do. So if you've been injured by asbestos or know someone who is, you're in the right place. If you just want to learn about the topic, you're also in the right place.

Asbestos trust funds were created to pay certain asbestos injury claims, but they do not work the same way as lawsuit verdicts or settlements. In this video, Justinian Lane explains how asbestos trusts operate, why some trusts are active while others have run out of money, and why payments can vary from one trust to another. You’ll learn why trust claims depend on eligibility rules, exposure history, medical documentation, and payment percentages — and why claimants should not assume every asbestos trust pays the same amount. For broader context, watch the full Asbestos 101 series.
