For decades, asbesto was a mainstay of American industry and manufacturing. The mineral’s natural strength, resiliency, and heat-resistant properties were used to fortify and reinforce a variedad de productos, from automotive parts to wall paint and roof shingles. While we know today that asbesto poses an incredible hazard to human health, millions of Americans spent years working with and living around asbesto

Since asbesto-related diseases have a long latency period, they can remain dormant—undetected—until old age. However, asbesto’s ability to stay silent belies its dangers. La exposición al asbesto has been correlated to a wide range of potentially deadly medical conditions, up to and including cancer.

Most people who develop asbesto illnesses worked with the mineral. However, people who lived near asbesto mines, mills, and manufacturing plants could be at increased risk for the mineral’s worst health effects.

Understanding El asbesto and its Dangers

El asbesto is a term used to describe seis categorías de minerales naturales:

  • El cristolito asbesto, or white asbesto, which is among the most commonly used forms of the mineral. White asbesto was used in construction materials, such as asphalt shingles and vinyl floor tiles, as well as automotive parts and home furnaces.
  • Amosita asbesto, or brown asbesto, was used to fabricate cement sheets and pipe insulation. Brown asbesto could also be found in insulating boards and other heat-resistant products.
  • Crocidolita asbesto, or blue asbesto, which was once applied to steam engines and used to supplement spray-on coatings.

Every form of asbesto is comprised of highly flexible fibers that are resistentes to heat, electricity, and corrosion. When asbesto is used for industrial purposes, it is usually broken down and used to fortify or reinforce other materials, such as paper, tape, or cement.

While asbesto is not inherently dangerous, it can cause serious—even life-threatening—complications if and when it is not handled with caution.

The Medical Dangers of El asbesto

Hoy sabemos que el asbesto can cause diseases that kill.

However, people have sought out asbesto for thousands of years. The ancient Greeks mined asbesto on the Isla Evvoia, al este de la costa ateniense. En la Era Medieval, European nobility ordered special garments woven from asbesto fibers, delighting guests with fireproof tablecloths and overcoats.

El asbesto production skyrocketed in the aftermath of the Industrial Revolution, as American industry tried meeting the needs of a newly urbanizing country. El asbesto was used to create the inexpensive—but incredibly durable—materials needed to produce economical, stable, and supposedly safe homes.

Unfortunately, asbesto’s strength is what makes it so dangerous. When asbesto minerals are broken down for industrial use, they can degrade and crumble. The resulting fibers—microscopic, odorless, and invisible to the naked eye—are small enough to be inhaled.

Once asbesto enters the lungs, it can infiltrate the rest of the respiratory system, potentially spreading to other parts of the body. Over time, asbesto fibers—strong, resilient, and almost impossible for the immune system to eradicate—can cause scarring, inflammation, and even cancer.

  • Asbestosis: La Asbestosis is a chronic lung condition caused by the inhalation of asbesto fibers. It is characterized by symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue, and weight loss. Asbestosis gets worse over time and cannot be cured.
  • Mesotelioma: Mesotelioma is an asbesto-related cancer that causes severe respiratory problems.
  • Otros tipos de cáncer: Research has shown that exposición al asbesto can lead to cáncer de pulmón, ovario y esófago.

There are Different Modes of Exposición al Asbesto

El asbesto-related diseases most often affect former asbesto workers and their families.

However, occupational exposición al asbesto is not the only form of recognized asbesto contamination and transmission.

La exposición al asbesto could be:

Ocupacional Exposición al Asbesto

  • Ocupacional, which occurs when workers are exposed to asbesto on the job or through work-related tasks. Occupational exposición al asbesto is the leading cause of asbesto-related diseases. This can also include military exposición al asbesto.

Secundaria Exposición al Asbesto

  • Secundaria, which occurs when people who did not work directly with asbesto are nonetheless exposed to mineral fibers, whether because they share a workspace or home with someone at occupational risk.

Product-Related Exposición al Asbesto

  • Relacionado con el producto, which occurs if and when an individual regularly uses, applies, or interacts with an asbesto-contaminated product. Despite the EPA’s wide-ranging bans on asbesto materials, the mineral is still found in popular consumer products. In one recent, highly publicized incident, scientists found high concentrations of asbesto in Johnson & Johnson’s talco de Johnson & Johnson .

Ambiental Exposición al Asbesto

  • Ambiental, which occurs when asbesto is present in the soil or air. The World Health Organization has found that asbesto deposits could also contaminate drinking water, whether it is drawn from a well or municipal system. Since asbesto is a naturally occurring mineral, everyone could be exposed to asbesto at some point in their life. However, the presence of asbesto-related industries in a region or community significantly increases the risk of environmental exposición al asbesto

The Risks of Environmental Exposición al Asbesto are Often Underrated

Recent findings suggest environmental exposición al asbesto is more of a danger than many people realize.

El gobierno de los Estados Unidos aprobó la El asbesto Hazard Emergency Response Act in 1986, instructing the federal Environmental Protection Agency to begin regulating the presence of asbesto in schools and other structures. By finales de la década, the EPA took further action, banning the sale, import, and manufacture of most asbesto productos.

Tragically, A.H.E.R.A. and the Environmental Protection Agency’s efforts came too late. While wide-ranging bans on asbesto products have undoubtedly saved hundreds of thousands of lives, countless Americans had already been exposed to asbesto between the 1920s and late 1970s.

En las décadas siguientes, un promedio de hasta 15 000 personas per year died from asbesto-related diseases.

Most people who die from asbesto illnesses are former asbesto workers, or people who lived in the same households as former asbesto workers.

Sin embargo, asbesto can spread to and affect people who never directly worked with the mineral. Environmental exposición al asbesto is a recognized but underrated source of danger—one that potentially could threaten the lives and livelihoods of millions of people around the world.

The Lingering Effects of Big El asbesto in Libby

Vermiculite, much like asbesto, has inherent heat-resistant properties. In fact, the two minerals often develop alongside each other. Unfortunately, in Libby, the local vermiculite mines contained massive amounts of a highly toxic, highly friable form of asbesto, tremolite-actinolite series.

Today, the EPA calls this particular variety of asbestoLibby Amphibole El asbesto”, o L.A.

Cuando W.R. Grace & Company se hizo cargo de las minas de vermiculita de Libby in 1963, its management knew its properties were contaminated by asbesto.

However, W.R. Grace & Company warned neither its employees nor the general public.

In the course of asbesto operations, W.R. Grace & Company exposed many of its employees to asbesto—and, by extension, their families. When miners came home from work, they would often be covered in vermiculite and asbesto dust. This dust could attach itself to almost any surface, from automobile interiors to furniture upholstery.

By 2009, the Environmental Protection Agency declared a public health emergency in Libby, declaring W.R.

Pero asbesto did not just affect miners and their families.

Un estudio de 2016 published in The Journal of La exposición Science & Environmental Epidemiology investigated incidences of asbesto-related disease and mortality among Libby residents who had no history of direct occupational vermiculite exposición

The researchers found that many Libby residents who passed away from asbesto illnesses never worked in or around the town’s mines. In fact, similar studies’ results suggested a causal association between the prevalence of pleural abnormalities and estimates of environmental exposición to asbesto fibers.

Even though Libby has since been declared “safe” by the EPA, medical examiners identified asbesto-related pleuropulmonary disease is roughly half of all Libby residents who consented to screening.

Ambiental Exposición al Asbesto Around the World

The United States, along with many other countries, has long-standing bans on the continued commercial uses of asbesto

However, not every country has taken strict action against asbesto. Iran, for instance, passed a law in 2000 ordering that asbesto production cease within seven years. Despite the rule, researchers found that millions of Iranians are exposed to potentially unsafe levels of asbesto in the air, atmosphere, and environment.

Many countries around the world continue to wrestle with environmental exposición al asbesto.

Although Iran’s last asbesto mine was closed in 2003, much of the country’s ageing infrastructure was built with asbesto-based materials. Continuous construction work, renovations, and urban expansion have raised airborne concentraciones de fibra en el aire a alturas precarias.

The Multifaceted Threat of Environmental Exposición al Asbesto in Turkey

In neighboring Turkey, widespread asbesto deposits have been associated with mayores tasas de enfermedades respiratorias. Researchers found that people across Turkey are exposed to environmental asbesto in a variety of ways:

  • Location: Central and eastern Turkey contain significant deposits of both tremolite and chrysotile asbesto. The presence of these deposits correlates to higher incidences of both benign and malignant pleural and pulmonary diseases.
  • Activities: In some parts of Turkey, villagers use white asbesto soil to create plastering materials and whitewash homes. Everyday activities, such as sweeping, and can unsettle the asbesto fibers in stucco, leading to elevated airborne fiber levels.
  • Occupation: Farmers might be at higher risk for exposición al asbesto simply because they cultivate lands contaminated by asbesto

Take Action If You Believe You Have Been Exposed to El asbesto in your Environment

Ambiental exposición al asbesto remains a critical public health threat, both in the United States and overseas. While the Environmental Protection Agency has restricted the production and sale of asbesto in America, anyone who lives in proximity to asbesto deposits—whether naturally occurring or industrial—remains at risk for serious asbesto-related illnesses.

Lesiones asbesto-related diseases like mesothelioma have a long latency period, which means they usually do not present any significant symptoms before they are diagnosed.

If you believe that you, or a loved one, have been exposed to asbesto, you may wish to:

Visite a un médico o profesional de la salud:

  • El asbesto-related diseases’ long latency periods mean that many people may harbor potentially life-threatening illnesses for decades. While asbesto can take years to noticeably and adversely impact an individual’s health, la detección temprana podría brindarle a su médico opciones de tratamiento adicionales.

Solicitar pruebas en el sitio:

  • Your city, county, or state might provide free or subsidized asbesto testing. If you suspect that your home or drinking water could be contaminated by asbesto, consider contacting your local environmental regulator or hiring a private asbesto testing company.
