For decades, shipbuilders, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbestosclaims.law\/sources-of-asbestos-exposure\/asbestos-products\">parts manufacturers<\/a>, and even the United States Navy relied on asbestos products to keep their vessels safe from fire.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though the Environmental Protection Agency <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbestosclaims.law\/asbestos-learning-center\/legal-history-of-asbestos\">banned<\/a> the import, sale, and use of most asbestos materials in the late 1980s, many watercraft remain contaminated. Experts believe that, in spite of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imo.org\/en\/OurWork\/Safety\/Pages\/Asbestos.aspx\">international treaties<\/a> regulating the use of asbestos aboard ships, many sailors and longshoremen <a href=\"http:\/\/ibasecretariat.org\/jc-why-most-ships-still-contain-asbestos.php#:~:text=Asbestos%20has%20been%20banned%20from,ships%20to%20be%20asbestos%20free.\">remain at-risk<\/a> for asbestos exposure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Historically, maritime workers injured by asbestos faced an uphill battle to receive compensation. When asbestos is broken down into small, fibrous strands, it can be reworked into different materials and compounds. During the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/large-scale-residential-demolition\/asbestos-containing-materials-acm-and-demolition\">asbestos could be found everywhere<\/a> from automotive parts to wall paint and roof shingles.&nbsp;Asbestos was accorded similar importance in the maritime industry, having been used aboard commercial watercraft and naval ships since at least the early 20<sup>th<\/sup> century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hazardous Asbestos Was Used to Build Sailing Vessels of all Kinds<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Between the 1930s and late 1980s, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.3109\/08958378.2011.643417\">almost every United States Navy vessel<\/a> was constructed with asbestos-containing materials.
