Crocidolite asbestos &#8211; also known as blue asbestos &#8211; is made up of particularly fine, sharp fibers, and is considered to be the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbestosclaims.law\/asbestos-learning-center\/types-of-asbestos\">most dangerous type of asbestos<\/a> you can come into contact with.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Wittenoom Gorge Mine operated until 1966, when it closed, citing falling asbestos prices and poor profitability. The mine employed approximately 7,000 workers during its operation, with a further 13,000 residing in the Wittenoom township.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given its proximity to the mine, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbestosclaims.law\/asbestos-learning-center\/types-of-asbestos\/\">blue asbestos<\/a> was liberally used throughout the township of Wittenoom; on roads and pavements, in school playgrounds &#8211; chillingly, asbestos pits were even made for children to play in.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns background_pampas is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column p-4 mx-3 is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-asbestos-shoveling-made-for-a-deadly-competition\">Asbestos Shoveling Made for a Deadly Competition&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>In the name of fun and friendly competition, Australian coal-mining towns used to carry out what became a tradition &#8211; asbestos shoveling. Miners would compete to see who could fill their 40-gallon drum up with the blue asbestos the fastest.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An image of such a competition has more recently surfaced, depicting a 1962 Wittenoom asbestos shoveling competition. The miners race to fill their drums as onlookers stand near &#8211; all the while, the deadly mineral fills the air around them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Many Asbestos Shoveling Competitors Died From Asbestos-Related Illnesses<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Tragically, all but one of the men in the image have since died from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbestosclaims.law\/asbestos-symptoms-and-treatment\/asbestos-injuries\">health issues related to asbestos exposure<\/a>. Ironically, the man who won the competition on the day pictured is the only man still alive, Arthur Della Maddalena.
