While people have worked with asbestos for thousands of years, it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbestosclaims.law\/asbestos-learning-center\/medical-history-of-asbestos\/\">became a mainstay of American construction in the early 20<sup>th<\/sup> century<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Many Construction Materials in Structures Built Before the 1980 Contain Asbestos<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Asbestos was used in many construction materials and products including but not limited to:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Asphalt and cement-based roof shingles&nbsp;<\/li><li>Siding&nbsp;<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbestosclaims.law\/asbestos-blog\/five-ways-to-test-vinyl-flooring-for-asbestos\/\">Vinyl floor<\/a> and wall tiles&nbsp;<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbestosclaims.law\/asbestos-blog\/how-do-i-remove-asbestos-ducting\/\">Heating ducts<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li><li>Furnaces&nbsp;<\/li><li>Pipe wraps and thermal tape&nbsp;<\/li><li>Paint<\/li><li>Insulation&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Although asbestos is now subject to strict regulatory controls, many homes constructed before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/asbestos\/epa-actions-protect-public-exposure-asbestos#:~:text=April%202022%20EPA's%20Proposed%20Ban,December%202020%20chrysotile%20asbestos%20risk\">the E.P.A.\u2019s asbestos ban<\/a> contain significant amounts of asbestos-based materials. If your home was built during or before the 1970s, you should presume that asbestos is present.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the presence of asbestos does not mean that a home needs to be evacuated or rebuilt. Instead, individuals who believe their home is contaminated should <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbestosclaims.law\/asbestos-blog\/should-i-check-my-home-or-property-for-asbestos-and-mold\/\">exercise caution when working with potential asbestos products<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column p-4 mx-3 is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-types-of-asbestos-insulation\">Types of Asbestos Insulation&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>Asbestos insulation comes in four different forms:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Loose-fill asbestos<\/strong>, which often has a white or grey coloration and could resemble broken-down Styrofoam. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbestosclaims.law\/asbestos-info-center-blog\/why-your-home-might-need-loose-fill-asbestos-testing\/\">Loose-fill asbestos<\/a> is typically more dangerous than other forms of asbestos, since it is also friable and easy to inhale.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Block asbestos<\/strong>, or semi-rigid asbestos slabs that would be cut on-site for insulation fitting. Block asbestos might resemble a white-colored brick or slab and usually contains high concentrations of raw asbestos. If this insulation is damaged, it could crumble and become airborne.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Asbestos wraps, <\/strong>which could have a cardboard-like appearance and texture. Since asbestos is naturally heat-resistant, wraps were used to insulate and protect hot water pipes, furnaces, and ducts.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Spray-on asbestos, <\/strong>designed to reduce labor costs and typically employed in large, non-residential structures. Spray-on foam insulations come in a variety of colors but are usually white or pink.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Fiberglass insulation<\/strong>, which may be sold as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/energysaver\/types-insulation\">blanket insulation, loose-fill insulation, or rigid fibrous insulation<\/a>. Since fiberglass is a glass product, it exhibits a slight \u201cshine\u201d or \u201cflicker\u201d when exposed to bright light.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Cellulose insulation<\/strong>, which can resemble asbestos.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Foam and fiberglass insulation materials are, in most instances, easily distinguishable from asbestos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, cellulose and asbestos insulation can appear very similar.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column p-4 mx-3 is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-tell-the-difference-between-cellulose-and-asbestos-insulation\">How to Tell the Difference Between Cellulose and Asbestos Insulation<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>Cellulose insulation can be differentiated from asbestos by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Material. <\/strong>Cellulose insulation is made from recycled paper products like cardboard and newspaper, whereas asbestos insulation is mineral-based.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Texture. <\/strong>Both asbestos and cellulose insulation may appear friable and \u201cfluffy.\u201d However, cellulose insulation may contain noticeable traces of fiber or paper.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Age. <\/strong>If your house was built after the early- to mid-1970s, its insulation is not likely asbestos-based.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However, telling the difference between asbestos and cellulose insulation can be difficult, especially if your house was built before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbestosclaims.law\/asbestos-learning-center\/legal-history-of-asbestos\/\">the E.P.A.\u2019s asbestos bans<\/a>.
