However, asbestos-related illnesses often stay dormant for years. Many people do not realize they have a disease until they begin showing symptoms later in life. While some symptoms indicate respiratory distress, others may appear relatively benign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pleural plaques are among the most common <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mesotheliomahub.com\/mesothelioma\/asbestos\/exposure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">early signs of asbestos exposure<\/a>. People have mined and used asbestos for thousands of years. Once lauded as a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/1542472\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">miracle mineral<\/a>,\u201d asbestos was renowned for its strength, resiliency, and heat-resistant properties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, asbestos\u2019s durability is what makes it dangerous. People who are exposed to raw asbestos or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mesotheliomahope.com\/products\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">asbestos-contaminated products<\/a> can inhale microscope asbestos fibers, most of which are smaller than the width of a single human hair. Over time, these fibers can accumulate inside the lungs, causing serious respiratory problems up to and including cancer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column p-4 mx-3 is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-understanding-pleural-plaques\">Understanding Pleural Plaques&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>Pleural plaques are one of the most common signs of asbestos exposure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pleura is a thin sheet of tissue that protects the outside of the lungs and lines the inside of the chest cavity. The pleura has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mesotheliomahope.com\/mesothelioma\/pleural\/pleural-plaque\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">two parts<\/a>:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>The parietal pleura, <\/strong>which lines the diaphragm and inner chest. Most asbestos-related pleural plaques are found in the parietal pleura.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>The visceral pleura, <\/strong>which lines the inside of the lungs. Pleural plaques can develop in the visceral pleura, although this is uncommon.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The two pleurae are composed of a cartilage-like tissue, called hyaline collagen. A healthy pleura should be about as thick as the rubber skin of a balloon. However, people who have been exposed to asbestos often have unusually thickened pleurae, which sometimes take on a mottled grey-and-white coloration.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These thickened pleurae are called pleural plaques.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns background_pampas is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column p-4 mx-3 is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-causes-of-pleural-plaques\">The Causes of Pleural Plaques&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>Almost everyone who has pleural plaques has a history of prior asbestos exposure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the relationship between asbestos and pleural plaques is clear, scientists still do not understand exactly how asbestos fibers infiltrate the pleurae.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Lymphatic System May Be Involved In Asbestos-Related Health Problems<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>However, one theory suggests that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2265277\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the lymphatic system<\/a> can carry asbestos into the pleural tissue surrounding the lungs. When asbestos enters the lungs, the body might recognize the fibers as a foreign substance, triggering a strong immune response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fibrosis can occur when tiny <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3687428\/#:~:text=Pleural%20macrophages%20are%20involved%20in,than%20half%20of%20all%20cells.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">microphages<\/a>\u2014special immune cells that kill microorganisms and help protect the body from infection\u2014irritate the pleural tissue. In fact, most people who have pleural plaques do not experience any adverse or unpleasant symptoms.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, pleural plaques can cause \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbestos.com\/mesothelioma\/pleural-plaques\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a minimal decrease in lung capacity<\/a>\u201d and overall respiratory function, but physicians do not believe these differences are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4364260\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">clinically significant<\/a>. In other words, pleural plaques rarely impact an individual\u2019s quality of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pleural Thickening&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Pleural plaques usually do not cause any problems on their own. But some people with a history of asbestos exposure might also experience a <em>thickening<\/em> of their pleurae and pleural plaques.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the pleurae continue to thicken, they could hinder the lungs, preventing them from fully expanding and causing intermittent or regular shortness of breath.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who\u2019s At Risk for Pleural Plaques&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Environmental Protection Agency banned the sale, manufacture, and import of most asbestos materials in the late 1980s.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, asbestos was widely used in many different industries before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/asbestos\/epa-actions-protect-public-exposure-asbestos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the E.P.A. ban<\/a>. While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbestos.com\/asbestos\/history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">people have used asbestos since ancient times<\/a>, the mining and production of asbestos materials skyrocketed after the late 19<sup>th<\/sup> century. Strong, heat resistant, and an excellent insulator, asbestos was used to create and fortify all types of materials.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Asbestos Is An Ongoing Problem and Health Danger<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the E.P.A.\u2019s ban, asbestos can still be found in older automotive parts, residential wall paint, and asphalt <a href=\"https:\/\/atlanticbaycontracting.com\/services\/asbestos-abatement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">roof<\/a> shingles.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, the people who created and worked with these sorts of asbestos-contaminated products often inhaled asbestos dust. Some professions had especially high incidences of asbestos exposure. They include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"http:\/\/mesotheliomavets.com\/veterans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Military veterans<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li><li>Firefighters&nbsp;<\/li><li>Miners&nbsp;<\/li><li>Steel mill workers<\/li><li>Boilermakers&nbsp;<\/li><li>Construction workers&nbsp;<\/li><li>Shipbuilders<\/li><li>Textile mill workers&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns background_pampas is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column p-4 mx-3 is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-diagnosing-pleural-plaques\">Diagnosing Pleural Plaques<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>Identifying and diagnosing pleural plaques usually requires a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blf.org.uk\/support-for-you\/asbestos-related-conditions\/pleural-plaques\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chest x-ray, C.T. scan<\/a>, or other medical imaging procedure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since pleural plaques are not cancerous and usually do not interfere with respiratory function, there is no need to visit a physician to diagnose or check on the progress of pleural plaques.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column p-4 mx-3 is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-treatment-for-asbestos-plaques-in-lungs\">Treatment for Asbestos Plaques in Lungs&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>Most cases of pleural plaques do not require any treatment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People who have pleural plaques and no other asbestos-related health conditions can live for decades without symptoms.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While pleural plaque patients usually have positive health prognoses, they could also be at higher risk for developing other, more serious asbestos-related illnesses, including mesothelioma.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns background_pampas is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column p-4 mx-3 is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pleural-plaques-and-other-asbestos-related-illnesses\">Pleural Plaques and Other Asbestos-related Illnesses&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>If you have pleural plaques, you may not develop any other asbestos-related illness; many people who have plaques never experience respiratory distress, nor do plaques progress to mesothelioma or cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, people who have pleural plaques should pay close attention to their health. While scientists are still trying to understand the relationship between plaques and mesothelioma, some studies suggest that plaques and pleural thickening could be <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jnci\/article\/105\/4\/293\/925337?login=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an independent risk factor<\/a> for later mesothelioma.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pleural Plaques and Asbestosis<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Pleural plaques may also coincide with asbestosis, a non-cancerous condition that can cause inflammation and scarring of the lung tissue.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you, or a loved one, have pleural plaques, you may be able to reduce your risk of other asbestos-related illnesses by staying healthy and:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Following a well-balanced diet&nbsp;<\/li><li>Exercising regularly&nbsp;<\/li><li>Quitting smoking&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Although <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mesothelioma.com\/asbestos-cancer\/pleural-plaques\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">smoking does not cause mesothelioma<\/a> or other asbestos-related diseases, people who have a histories of both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4537132\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">smoking cigarettes and asbestos exposure<\/a> are among the highest-risk groups for lung cancer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column p-4 mx-3 is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-to-contact-a-doctor-about-asbestos-related-pleural-plaques\">When to Contact a Doctor about Asbestos-Related Pleural Plaques<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>Even if you never develop another asbestos-related health condition, you should tell your doctor if you have a confirmed or suspected history of asbestos exposure. While pleural plaques are usually benign, they are associated with other, comparatively dangerous health conditions and disorders.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People who have diagnosed pleural plaques should always contact their physician if they exhibit medical signs and symptoms including:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Shortness of breath&nbsp;<\/li><li>Chest pain<\/li><li>Tightness in the chest&nbsp;<\/li><li>Coughing up blood&nbsp;<\/li><li>Cracking or wheezing sound when breathing or coughing&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These symptoms could indicate a more serious health problem, such as mesothelioma, asbestosis, or lung cancer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Asbestos Patients Have Options&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The asbestos industry knew for years that its products had the potential to cause serious health problems. However, asbestos manufacturers actively sought to conceal the mineral\u2019s dangers, sacrificing workers\u2019 well-being to line their own pockets. The asbestos industry only admitted defeat when the evidence became overwhelming.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While pleural plaques do not usually interfere in patients\u2019 ability to live happy, healthy lives, many people who have pleural plaques develop more serious health conditions such as:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Asbestosis&nbsp;<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mesotheliomahub.com\/mesothelioma\/asbestos-cancer\/pleural-effusion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pleural effusion<\/a><\/li><li>Lung fibrosis<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/searchesforyou.com\/blog\/who-is-at-risk-of-mesothelioma-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mesothelioma<\/a><\/li><li>Lung cancer<\/li><li>Ovarian cancer<\/li><li>Laryngeal cancer<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The costs of treating a serious, asbestos-related disease can seem insurmountable: medical studies have shown that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8354284\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">average<\/a> per-incident hospitalization cost for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acemap.info\/paper\/222527891\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">malignant pleural mesothelioma<\/a> ranges between $10,000 and $50,000. These costs can mount quickly.
