Asbestos has many potential uses, but was renowned for its strength, resiliency, and heat-resistant properties. Builders put asbestos in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mesotheliomahub.com\/mesothelioma\/asbestos\/where-is-asbestos\/products\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">everything from wall insulation to vinyl floor tiles<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbestosclaims.law\/medical-history-of-asbestos\">the dangers of asbestos are well-known<\/a>. Scientists have found that asbestos exposure is associated with serious respiratory disorders, including mesothelioma and different kinds of cancer. Since so many homes were built using this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbestosclaims.law\/malignant-injuries\">deadly substance<\/a>, many states and cities offer free asbestos testing services and registries of licensed asbestos removal companies. Since asbestos threads are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbestosclaims.law\/types-of-asbestos\">resistant to heat, fire, and electricity<\/a>, they were used to reinforce many different industrial products.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, asbestos fibers\u2019 resiliency can also make them dangerous. When people inhale asbestos, the fibers could become embedded in their lungs, remaining there for decades. While the federal government banned the manufacture, import, and sale of most asbestos products in 1989, many older buildings still contain asbestos-contaminated materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although most carpets do not contain asbestos, carpet underlays\u2014the material that is placed underneath carpets before they are laid down\u2014often do. In Australia, for instance, many carpet underlays were made from old hessian bags. These bags were often shipped in from overseas. They were produced using different combinations of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sers.net.au\/asbestos-carpet-underlay-is-the-danger-under-your-feet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">asbestos, wool, and jute<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the dangers of asbestos started to become common knowledge, these bags were broken down, shredded, and cleaned. However, there is still a small chance that carpet underlays could contain asbestos.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to Identify Asbestos on Carpet Underlay\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Asbestos can be difficult to identify if you have not been trained to spot the presence of asbestos. Most of the time, however, asbestos-based underlay is a brown-colored material that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sers.net.au\/asbestos-carpet-underlay-is-the-danger-under-your-feet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">looks like a woven sack<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Carpet and Floor Components That Could Contain Asbestos&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>However, carpet underlays are not the only potential source of asbestos contamination. According to the University of Connecticut, the following floor components are \u201clikely\u201d to contain asbestos:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Older 12\u201dx12\u201d floor tiles&nbsp;<\/li><li>Older 9\u201dx9\u201d floor tiles&nbsp;<\/li><li>Floor tile mosaics&nbsp;<\/li><li>Different carpet glues&nbsp;<\/li><li>Cove bases&nbsp;<\/li><li>Adhesives used for carpets, tile, and other flooring <sup>1<\/sup>&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>If your home was constructed before 1981,<sup>2<\/sup> you should presume that asbestos is present in:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Vinyl Asbestos Tiles: <\/strong>Asbestos was mixed into vinyl flooring to increase tensile strength. These tiles could be found anywhere in a home.<\/li><li><strong>Linoleum or Vinyl Sheet Flooring: <\/strong>Sheet flooring could have asbestos in its felt backing. While asbestos-contaminated linoleum and vinyl is not necessarily dangerous, the felt could be damaged during removal or renovations. However, asbestos is not necessarily dangerous when it is left undisturbed. Most asbestos-based carpet underlays are still safe for everyday use. Walking on carpets with asbestos-based underlays, or vacuuming, will not cause asbestos fibres to:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthywa.wa.gov.au\/Articles\/A_E\/Asbestos-carpet-underlay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spread from underneath a good-condition carpet<\/a> into other parts of a home; or&nbsp;<\/li><li>Become airborne and inhalable.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While asbestos-based carpets might be safe for everyday use, you should exercise extreme caution when removing asbestos containing carpets and underlays. You should:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Wear a secure, tight-fitting face mask;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Wear disposable clothing, such as overalls; and&nbsp;<\/li><li>Handle any potentially asbestos-contaminated materials gently, taking care to minimize the release of dust from rolled up or folded underlays.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you believe you may have disturbed asbestos in a home, office, or other structure, you should immediately contact your local health authority.
