These products were known as asbestos containing materials (ACM).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asbestos is easy to mine and easy to combine with other materials to produce a variety of products, which could be delivered high value at very low cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, some of these properties like being fibrous, friable, and durablecaused asbestos to become a very dangerous material for human health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"boxtextnew\" style=\"border: 1px solid #000;\">\n    <div class=\"row p-5\">\n        <div class=\"col-md-12\">\n            <table>\n                <tbody>\n                    <tr>\n                        <td>\n                            <h3>The National Library of Medicine has found that asbestosis is prevalent in a variety of construction trades because of the widespread use of asbestos in those environments.<sup>1<\/sup><\/h3>\n                           \n                        <\/td>\n                    <\/tr>\n                <\/tbody>\n            <\/table>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns background_pampas is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column p-4 mx-3 is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-asbestos-in-floor-tiles\">Asbestos in Floor Tiles<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>During the 1900s, asbestos became a much sought after substance and began to be used all over the world. It became one of the most important substances used in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbestosclaims.law\/asbestos-blog\/would-a-house-built-in-the-1920s-have-asbestos\/\">construction activities<\/a> related to flooring, piping, ceiling, soundproofing, and other allied activities. Even the adhesives that were used in these activities, including grouting that had ACMs in them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asbestos\u2019 properties of heat resistance and strength combined with its moisture resistance and durability were ideal for use in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bobvila.com\/articles\/asbestos-floor-tiles\/\">floor tiles<\/a> and much of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbestosclaims.law\/asbestos-learning-center\/?highlight=building\">buildings<\/a> in the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century prior to 1982 had tiles with ACMs in them when used as floor tiles, wall tiles and ceiling tiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column p-4 mx-3 is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dangers-of-asbestos-exposure\">Dangers of Asbestos Exposure<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>Obviously, people working on activities that involved ACMs were the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ziprecruiter.com\/career\/Flooring-Installer\/What-Is-How-to-Become\">flooring installers<\/a> and their supporting staff. They would have handled these ACM tiles along with the adhesives while grouting as well. Similarly, these flooring installers would also have handled repairs of broken tiles or removal of old tiles and replacing them with new tiles with ACMs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus, these <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbestosclaims.law\/asbestos-blog\/asbestos-dangers-in-the-workplace\/\">technicians would have been exposed to asbestos<\/a> in some form or the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Research has shown the enormous health dangers of all types of asbestos.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstage.jst.go.jp\/article\/indhealth\/45\/3\/45_3_379\/_pdf\">Various research studies<\/a> undertaken during the 20th century established the undeniable fact of the danger of asbestos exposure on the health of those exposed. It was established that asbestos causes various diseases known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbestosclaims.law\/asbestos-symptoms-and-treatment\/asbestos-related-diseases\/asbestos-related-diseases-data\/\">asbestos-related disease<\/a> (ARD). These included both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbestosclaims.law\/asbestos-symptoms-and-treatment\/asbestos-related-diseases\/malignant-injuries\/\">cancerous<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbestosclaims.law\/asbestos-symptoms-and-treatment\/asbestos-related-diseases\/non-malignant-injuries\/\">non-cancerous disease<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Asbestos is a fibrous mineral comprising thousands of densely packed fibers.&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Asbestos has two distinct characteristics of being friable or non-friable:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redalyc.org\/journal\/496\/49647009029\/html\/\">Friable<\/a> refers to asbestos that is loosely bound and can be crumbled to powder by simple crushing of the hands.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redalyc.org\/journal\/496\/49647009029\/html\/\">Non-friable<\/a> refers to asbestos fibers tightly packed and cannot be disturbed easily. However, over time and with sufficient wear and tear it can take the role of the friable form.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In both cases, when asbestos is disturbed, it releases thousands of fibers into the air, which are microscopic and cannot be seen by the naked eye.People in the vicinity of these fibers can inhale them or even swallow them and that is when the problems start for people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"boxtextnew\" style=\"border: 1px solid #000;\">\n    <div class=\"row p-5\">\n        <div class=\"col-md-12\">\n            <table>\n                <tbody>\n                    <tr>\n                        <td>\n                            <h3>\u201cSome asbestos fibers may bypass\u2026your body\u2019s natural defenses\u2026and lodge deep within your lungs. Since asbestos is very durable, it can stay in the body for a long time without being decomposed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When people inhale fibers or swallow them, the fibers can stay in the lungs or the lining of the lungs or the lining of the abdomen for a long time. Similarly, a pleural disease is caused by asbestos, which is the thickening of the lining of the lung.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These ARDs are a direct result of high dose of asbestos exposure and therefore termed as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redalyc.org\/journal\/496\/49647009029\/html\/\">dose-response disease<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All ARDs have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redalyc.org\/journal\/496\/49647009029\/html\/\">long latency periods<\/a>. This means that it takes a long time for the ARD to show up in a diagnosis. There have been cases of lung cancer being diagnosed 30 years after asbestos exposure and mesothelioma 40 years after exposure. Thus, such installers still living today would run the risk of acquiring an ARD because of high-dose response. They could be diagnosed late in life because of the long latency period.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The possibility is high because protective measures were not available then and almost all installers would have been subject to asbestos exposure. Therefore, such installers should see their physicians periodically to rule out the possibility of an ARD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 style=\"padding: 15px;border: 1px solid;border-bottom: 0;margin: 0;background: #976e2e;color: white !important;\"><strong><strong><strong>Nearly every building constructed before the mid-1980s contained asbestos-containing building materials and products, <u>including flooring materials like tiles.<\/u><\/p>\nAnyone working in construction or demolition of those structures is potentially at risk of asbestos exposure and asbestos-related diseases.\n<strong>asbestos-related diseases<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\"><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>As mentioned earlier, <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinescientificresearch.com\/articles\/asbestos-presence-in-20th-century-buildings.pdf\">buildings constructed prior to 1982<\/a> did use flooring tiles with ACMs in them. If they continue to be standing today, then they have the potential to cause asbestos exposure if the building is taken up for renovation or demolition. When flooring installers remove floor tiles with ACMs, then the asbestos in the tiles would be disturbed, releasing asbestos fibers and thus cause exposure to the people working on them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They have to take precautions while undertaking repairs or renovation or demolition of buildings that may have ACMs in them. One thing going for them is the host of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/asbestos\/asbestos-laws-and-regulations\">regulations and laws that federal and state agencies<\/a> have implemented to make people working with risks of asbestos exposure safe.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The regulations prescribe preventive measures like wearing masks and Nomex coveralls to protect them from asbestos exposure.
