Experts believe that exposure to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lung.org\/lung-health-diseases\/lung-disease-lookup\/copd\/what-causes-copd\">environmental hazards<\/a>, including air pollution and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbestosclaims.law\/asbestos-blog\/what-is-environmental-asbestos-exposure\/\">asbestos contamination<\/a>, could also cause or contribute to its development.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While scientists have yet to determine whether asbestos exposure can cause COPD by itself, a growing body of evidence suggests that asbestos exposure could\u2014at the very least\u2014increase an individual\u2019s lifetime chance of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column p-4 mx-3 is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-understanding-chronic-obstructive-pulmonary-disease-1\">Understanding Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a respiratory condition characterized by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/copd\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20353679\">obstructed airflow to and from the lungs<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, COPD is not a single disease. It is, instead, a diagnostic label that can encompass several different illnesses. In the United States, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease typically includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhlbi.nih.gov\/health\/copd\">the following conditions<\/a>:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Emphysema. <\/strong>Emphysema can develop when there is significant damage to the walls between the air sacs of the lungs. People who have emphysema have weaker air sacs and may struggle breathing.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Chronic bronchitis. <\/strong>Chronic bronchitis, or long-term bronchitis, is the inflammation of the interior lining of the bronchial tubes, which carry air to and from the lungs. Bronchitis can cause frequent and intense fits of coughing.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Some physicians believe that <a href=\"https:\/\/stanfordhealthcare.org\/medical-conditions\/chest-lungs-and-airways\/chronic-obstructive-pulmonary-disease\/types.html\">asthma should also be considered a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease<\/a>. However, there is no uniform consensus on its categorization.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Symptoms of COPD<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Since COPD is a progressive illness, it may not present with any symptoms\u2014at least not immediately. If it does, then they may be mild and only scarcely noticeable.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease begins to develop, its symptoms may become more serious and more alarming.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhlbi.nih.gov\/health\/copd\/symptoms\">most common symptoms of COPD<\/a> include the following:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Chronic cough<\/strong>, sometimes referred to as \u201csmoker\u2019s cough.\u201d An ongoing cough is often the first symptom of a COPD.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Shortness of breath<\/strong>, which may be most pronounced during or shortly after physical activity.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Wheezing or whistling sounds<\/strong> that accompany ordinary breathing.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Tightness or a sense of heaviness in the chest<\/strong>, which may be either persistent or intermittent but recurring.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Later-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease can cause other symptoms, some of which may seem unrelated. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/1660-4601\/17\/19\/7085\">recent analysis<\/a> published in the <em>International Journal of Environmental Research &amp; Public Health<\/em>, for instance, examined the prevalence of non-cancerous respiratory conditions among Canadian insulators and construction workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The insulation and construction industries are often associated with asbestos exposure and breathing problems like COPD.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Insulators, who apply, remove, and repair of thermal protective materials in buildings and other structures, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbestosclaims.law\/asbestos-in-the-military\/us-navy\/\">naval ships<\/a> and piping infrastructures. When people inhale microscopic asbestos fibers, they can become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/asbestosis\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20354637\">lodged within the alveoli<\/a>, small sacs within the lungs that convert oxygen to carbon dioxide. Over time, these fibers can irritate and scar the surrounding tissue, making it more and more difficult to breathe.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People who suffer from moderate to severe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbestosclaims.law\/asbestos-blog\/asbestosis-and-silicosis-similarities-differences\/\">asbestosis<\/a> may develop chronic obstructive pulmonary disease as a complication of asbestosis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Identifying Asbestos-Related Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/copd\/diagnosis-treatment\/drc-20353685\">difficult to diagnose<\/a>, in large part because its symptoms overlap with those of other common respiratory conditions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If and when COPD is present alongside asbestos-related illnesses, like asbestosis, your doctor may need to perform additional diagnostic tests to confirm its presence. These tests could include the following:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Lung function tests. <\/strong>A lung function test measures the amount of air that an individual can inhale and exhale. Spirometry, a common form of lung function test, uses a large tube connected to a small machine. The patient blows into the tube, which assesses lung volume, capacity, and relative function.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Chest x-rays. <\/strong>Chest x-rays can detect emphysema as well as asbestosis, pleural effusions, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbestosclaims.law\/asbestos-claims-mesothelioma-claims\/mesothelioma-cancer-claims\/\">malignant pleural mesothelioma,<\/a> and other asbestos-related conditions.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>CT scans. <\/strong>CT scans can identify a variety of respiratory conditions.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Arterial blood gas analysis. <\/strong>Arterial blood gas analyses measure lung function by evaluating the respiratory system\u2019s ability to exchange oxygen for carbon dioxide.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Laboratory tests. <\/strong>Laboratory tests cannot necessarily detect or diagnose chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, but they may be used to investigate other potential causes of respiratory failure and distress.<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns background_pampas is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column p-4 mx-3 is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-second-hand-asbestos-exposure-secondary-asbestos-exposure-2\">Second-hand asbestos exposure (Secondary Asbestos Exposure)<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>Even the workers\u2019 families were affected due to secondhand exposure\u2014asbestos fibers are extremely durable and can cling to skin and clothing, traveling great distances with those directly exposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Asbestos fibers have no taste or smell, and can be microscopic, so you may not realize you were breathing them.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Unfortunately, many workers\u2019 families and other household members were exposed to asbestos as well, as asbestos was brought home daily in neighborhoods across the U.S. on work-clothing<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is often known as secondary or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbestosclaims.law\/asbestos-blog\/what-is-second-hand-asbestos-exposure-and-is-it-dangerous\/?highlight=%22second%20hand%22\">second-hand asbestos exposure<\/a> (or domestic \/ household family asbestos exposure). Your physician might recommend:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lifestyle Changes<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbestosclaims.law\/asbestos-blog\/synergistic-health-effects-of-asbestos-and-smoking\/\">smoke cigarettes<\/a>, then quitting is likely the first step in alleviating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease-related pain. Smoking cessation could prevent COPD from progressing and, in some cases, improve lung function.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Medication<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A wide variety of medications are used to treat COPD, including the following:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Bronchodilators, such as albuterol and levalbuterol&nbsp;<\/li><li>Inhaled steroids, including fluticasone and budesonide&nbsp;<\/li><li>Common inhalers, like formoterol and budesonide, fluticasone and vilanterol, and salmeterol and fluticasone&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lung Therapy&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Lung therapy could include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Oxygen therapy<\/strong>, which provides supplemental oxygen to the lungs via a small, portrable device. Different&nbsp; types of oxygen therapy can make it easier for COPD patients to exercise their independence and complete everyday tasks and chores.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Pulmonary rehabilitation programs, <\/strong>which typically include some combination of educational courses, exercise training, nutrition advice, and counseling.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Surgery<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Surgery is a last-resort option for patients with some forms of severe emphysema.
