Asbestos lawyers have close relationships with mesothelioma doctors. Sometimes, that relationship is too close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For years, Dr. Robert Taub was head of the Mesothelioma Center at New York Presbyterian Hospital\/Columbia Medical Center in New York City. Initially, Dr. Taub called mesothelioma lawyers \u201cambulance chasers<\/a>.\u201d Then, he got closer to then-Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Silver hinted that if his firm got more cases, the firm would give more money to mesothelioma research. Between 2003 and 2013, Dr. Taub referred about forty-eight of his mesothelioma patients to Silver. In fact, Dr. Traub allegedly told one of his patients that her current lawyer was \u201cno good\u201d and that she should call Silver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SIlver\u2019s firm never contributed anything to mesothelioma research. Taub\u2019s involvement in the scheme cost him his job at Columbia University, but he was never charged with a crime.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mesothelioma is a very rare and aggressive kind of heart\/lung cancer. This cancer is also one of the most painful kinds of cancer, which is saying a lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Understanding what mesothelioma is<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Tumors in the meso lining between the heart and lungs grow so slowly and spread so discreetly that the mesothelioma latency period is as long as seventy years<\/a>. That\u2019s usually when symptoms appear, not when doctors discover mesothelioma. There\u2019s a big difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initial cancer symptoms include pain, weight loss, and fatigue. Pretty much any illness or injury could cause such symptoms. Making matters worse, many mesothelioma victims are over 70. Therefore, both they and their doctors might conclude they say simply \u201cgetting older.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similarities between mesothelioma cancer and NSCLC (non-small cell lung cancer)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A cancer diagnosis is the next step, but it\u2019s not the final step. Initially, mesothelioma looks a lot like NSCLC<\/a>. Non-small cell lung cancer is, by far, the most common kind of lung cancer. So, a misdiagnosis is an easy mistake to make, even for an experienced oncologist. Unfortunately, it\u2019s also a fatal mistake, at least in many cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As mentioned, mesothelioma is very aggressive. NSCLC is non-aggressive. So, NSCLC treatments are pretty much useless against mesothelioma, and the cancer soon metastasizes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Advanced mesothelioma treatments are very expensive and, in many cases, only slow the progression of this disease. There\u2019s no known effective treatment for advanced mesothelioma.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mesothelioma Research and Causes for Concern<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

That grim assessment might not be true much longer. Dutch researchers are very hopeful that a combination of advanced gene therapy and advanced drug therapy<\/a> might make mesothelioma more like NSCLC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Researchers already know that controlling BAP-1 genetic mutations is a key to controlling mesothelioma. However, that\u2019s a task much easier said than done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Health research on treatment of mesothelioma<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Dutch researchers gave tazemetostat and zoledronic acid, the two most effective BAP-1 genetic suppressors, to laboratory mice. These mice survived about four weeks longer than the control mice. That might not sound like much, but four weeks to a mouse is almost like four years to a person. Additionally, every moment is precious. If someone offered us an extra four years to live, we\u2019d probably take that offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIdentifying biomarker-based dependencies and exploiting them have a high potential to lead to new treatment options,\u201d the study authors at the Netherlands Cancer Institute said. \u201cStratification of patients based on biomarkers could add much needed therapeutic strategies against this highly aggressive disease.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The FDA has approved tazemetostat, but not zoledronic acid. A 2022 tazemetostat clinical trial tested the drug on 70 patients with recurrent cancer and the BAP-1 mutation. The median overall survival was 41 weeks. Less than 5 percent  of the patients experienced severe drug-related side effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These patients were second-line setting patients. They had tried and failed previous therapies. This additional factor makes these trials even more encouraging.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
