Monitor and the U.S.S. Arizona, the latter of which was destroyed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the Second World War, the Brooklyn Navy Yard expanded its workforce to encompass more than 70,000 employees. While the facility helped launch the United States\u2019 invasions of Western Europe and the Mediterranean, the military inadvertently exposed many of the yard\u2019s workers to a potentially life-threatening concentrations of asbestos.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the yard was formally decommissioned in 1966, it was soon acquired by the City of New York and transformed into in a private development corporation, Commerce Labor and Industry in the County of Kings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, nobody knows exactly how many military contractors, or their loved ones, have been hurt by the asbestos products manufactured at Brooklyn Navy Yard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, research suggests that former sailors, shipbuilders, and longshoremen are at heightened risk for aggressive, asbestos-related conditions, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbestosclaims.law\/asbestos-symptoms-and-treatment\/asbestos-injuries\/\">up to and including and cancer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns background_pampas is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column p-4 mx-3 is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-asbestos-at-the-brooklyn-navy-yard\">Asbestos at the Brooklyn Navy Yard<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>People have worked with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbestosclaims.law\/asbestos-learning-center\/types-of-asbestos\/\">asbestos<\/a> since times immemorial. However, asbestos only became a mainstay of American manufacturing between the late 19<sup>th<\/sup> and early 20<sup>th<\/sup> centuries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the United States industrialized, millions of people began moving away from the countryside and into cities. These people brought with them not only dreams for a better life, but a demand for cheap consumer goods and affordable urban housing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For decades, home builders and manufacturers thought that asbestos could provide a ready-made solution to America\u2019s urbanization.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asbestos was used for shipbuilding and fireproofing because asbestos minerals are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Strong<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Resilient<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Difficult to corrode<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Electrical insulators<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Fire-resistant<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Asbestos\u2019s durability and fire-resistant qualities made it especially attractive to the United States Navy, which hoped that asbestos-based products could fortify ships and prevent maritime catastrophes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Between 1939 and 1945, the Brooklyn Navy Yard was among the most active shipbuilding sites in the country. However, employees who never set foot aboard a completed vessel may have still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbestosclaims.law\/sources-of-asbestos-exposure\/occupational-exposure\/\">worked with dangerous amounts of asbestos<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Areas of high asbestos exposure at the Brooklyn Navy Yard<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The United States Navy and Brooklyn Navy Yard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbestosclaims.law\/sources-of-asbestos-exposure\/asbestos-products\/\">used asbestos<\/a> to:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Insulate walls;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Fabricate boiler and duct components;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Line incinerators; and&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Wrap pipes, both inside shipbuilding facilities and on-board boats still under construction.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Some products were inherently more dangerous than others. Lagging, for instance, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mesothelioma.com\/asbestos-exposure\/jobsites\/shipyards\/brooklyn-navy-yard\/\">a cloth-like <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mesothelioma.com\/asbestos-exposure\/jobsites\/shipyards\/brooklyn-navy-yard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">material<\/a> used to wrap steam pipes in ships. Brooklyn Navy Yard employees were sometimes tasked with making their own lagging, which could have contained concentrations of asbestos up to 90%.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column p-4 mx-3 is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-safety-measures-for-dealing-with-asbestos-at-the-brooklyn-navy-yard\">Safety Measures for dealing with asbestos at the Brooklyn Navy Yard<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<h3 class=\"mt-0 wp-block-heading\">Asbestos warnings and regulations came after asbestos companies knew it was unhealthy.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the risks of asbestos were not well-known until the 1970s, few sailors or shipbuilders used safety equipment to work with lagging and other asbestos-contaminated products.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the United States Armed Forces suspected the asbestos could cause respiratory disorders as early as the 1930s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"boxtextnew\" style=\"border: 1px solid #000;\">\n    <div class=\"row p-5\">\n        <div class=\"col-md-12\">\n            <table>\n                <tbody>\n                    <tr>\n                        <td>\n                            <h3>&#8220;The overall evidence suggests there is no safe level of asbestos exposure.\u201d<\/h3>\n                            <p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/about-cancer\/causes-prevention\/risk\/substances\/asbestos\/asbestos-fact-sheet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Cancer Institute\n<\/a> (NIH) <sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n                        <\/td>\n                    <\/tr>\n                <\/tbody>\n            <\/table>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Early occupational regulation of asbestos<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1940, Brooklyn Navy Yard safety inspectors recommended procedural overhauls to protect workers from asbestos. They commissioned medical studies on asbestos\u2019 health effects and tried to find ways to limit risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But when it became apparent that asbestos can cause chronic respiratory disorders, genetic mutations, and even cancer, the asbestos industry actively concealed its findings, hoping that the American public would never realize that the so-called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbestosclaims.law\/asbestos-blog\/asbestos-the-miracle-mineral\/\">miracle mineral<\/a>\u201d is anything but miraculous.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Asbestos regulation in the United States was late in arriving.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, it took decades for the government to begin curtailing the widespread use of asbestos. The federal Environmental Protection Agency, for instance, did not begin taking action against asbestos until the late 1970s.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The American Lung Association has stated that once inhaled or swallowed, some asbestos fibers never leave the body.<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"boxtextnew\" style=\"border: 1px solid #000;\">\n    <div class=\"row p-5\">\n        <div class=\"col-md-12\">\n            <table>\n                <tbody>\n                    <tr>\n                        <td>\n                            <h3>\u201cSome asbestos fibers may bypass\u2026your body\u2019s natural defenses\u2026and lodge deep within your lungs. Seatrain went on to construct four large crude-oil carriers\u2014among the largest vessels ever built at Brooklyn Shipyard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shipbuilding gets decommissioned at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Seatrain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mesotheliomahelp.org\/navy\/shipyards\/brooklyn-navy-ship-yard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ceased operations<\/a> in 1979.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With Seatrain closed, the City of New York considered other uses for its lands. Gradually, the space was transformed into a mixed-use private manufacturing and commercial site, occupied by businesses of all kinds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While several historical buildings remain on the former grounds of Brooklyn Navy Yard, the City of New York has hired asbestos abatement companies to clear the yard of contaminants.
