Harbison-Walker Refractories Company was originally named the Star Fire Brick Company when it was founded in 1865 and it made clay bricks for large furnaces. The company changed ownership ten (10) years later and was renamed Harbison-Walker in 1902.

• Harbison-Walker manufactured refractory materials, which were in high demand due to increased industrial production in the U.S., and started using asbestos fibers in its products by the 1950s.

• The company expanded its line and used asbestos in products like block and cement by 1964. 

• In 1967, Harbison-Walker was purchased by another company, Dresser Industries, Inc. (which now goes by DII Industries).

• Thirty years after this merger, Harbison-Walker became affiliated with another asbestos corporation called Halliburton Company.

• Harbison-Walker reportedly used asbestos in its products through the 1970s.

•  As of 2015, it changed its name to HarbisonWalker International.

Harbison-Walker asbestos products were used widely in the construction industry, in mills and refineries, power plants, and on some U.S. Navy ships. Those employed by Harbison-Walker to work in its plants, manufacturing its products, were at risk of exposure to harmful asbestos fibers. 

Other occupations like refinery workers, factory workers, and boilermakers, in both military and civilian capacities, were at risk of developing asbestos related diseases from using the company’s products.

Harbison-Walker/DII Industries, LLC Asbestos Trust History

The bankruptcy process was twofold for Harbison-Walker. It filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on February 14, 2002. This filing did not include a reorganization plan which establishes an asbestos bankruptcy trust. 

Therefore, on December 6, 2003, DII Industries, on behalf of Harbison-Walker and numerous other subsidiaries (like Halliburton), filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Its bankruptcy trust was established on January 20, 2005.

In 2005, DII Industries (Harbison-Walker) created the DII Industries, LLC Asbestos Personal Injury Trust under its Chapter 11 Joint Plan of Reorganization. The current payment percentage is 60%.

Per the Trust’s website, one of the purposes of the trust is to assume the responsibility of Harbison-Walker asbestos claims, in addition to those of some other subsidiaries. The purpose of the payment percentage is to ensure that funds remain in the Trust for future claimants.

In 2021, 2,434 Harbison Walker claims were settled with the Trust, according to its annual financial report.

The report also details that $59,115,299 was paid out in claims in 2021, adding to the total of $1,474,903,848 that the Trust has paid since it was established.

Some military jobs, such as mechanics, boilermakers, and pipefitters, to name a few, would cause servicemembers to be directly exposed to asbestos. Other jobs required that work be done near those using or working with asbestos, which still put those workers at risk. A military veteran’s benefits will not be affected by filing asbestos trust claims; this is true even if you already receive disability benefits from the VA.
